Program note:
This piece grew from a mental image I had of a great machine composed of gears of various sizes moving at different speeds. As the piece progresses, these rusty gears begin to slip and eventually to grind against one another. Finally, the machine breaks down, the gears turning more and more slowly before stopping altogether.
